INNER CADENCE: AN EXHIBITION OF MODERN ABSTRACTS
Exhibit Dates: March 2 April 15
Reception: Saturday, March 3, 7 11pm
Contemporary abstracts taken from the inner resources of five unique artists highlight this collection. Join us for a provocative exhibit full of rhythm and vibrating with color. Artists Vivian Fishbone, Daniel Hoffman, Nessa Grainger, Jonathan Acheson, and Kass Morin Freeman share their expressions in Inner Cadence: An Exhibition of Modern Abstracts, now showing at Wired Gallery in Bethlehem.
Vivian Fishbones paintings are emotional and poetic. Most are founded on human interaction, both of her own experiences and that of others she observes. Light, color and texture are her great loves. She is constantly looking for different, non-traditional methods of expression. She believes that good art comes from three sources: innate creativity; unorthodox ways of seeing; and the expression of personal emotion. She unites these resources seamlessly in the acrylic masterpieces she has selected for exhibition.
Nessa Graingers current work includes elements of her earlier styles, particularly her desire to capture landscapes in their natural, unspoiled state of beauty. But, she continues to experiment and her latest work is a testament to her search to create something new and original. She still creates abstract landscapes, but they are no longer the same. They are experimental abstractions created with water media and acrylics. The combination produces an explosion of unexpected colors, shapes, and textures.
Daniel Hoffmans recent work involves a Burnt Series, in which the front plane of the painting is torched. Rather than simply cutting through the surface, torching creates an organic texture that compliments the organic nature of the painted surface. The spaces created by the burnt-out areas create different situations in each piece. The organic appeal of these pieces is often complimented by hidden niches of vibrant color or secret cavities for the eye to explore.
Kass Morin Freeman initially studied and worked in metal sculpture and her affection for hard-edged shapes often finds itself revealed in the subjects she chooses for her watercolors. Rusted metal, corroded machinery, and complex architecture all play their part in her non-traditional watercolors. The storytelling quality of a picture, whether it is the story of an object, place, or person, is important to her and the creation of her works. The story evolves in her mind and the elements (people, places, or objects) become symbolic within the story.
Jonathan Acheson's recent pieces are part of the Net Paintings series, which he has been developing for the past several years. He references them as nets because of their interlocking pattern, and also because often the original colors and pattern are only captured as tiny flecks underneath the layers of paint. Their mosaic quality is completely contrived with the artists brush. While the style of each work within the series is similar, each develops a different feel based on the circumstances of when it was made these variables have been drawn within the work, and have influenced their final appearance and individual character.
