Jacqueline Unanue’s work is informed by the pre-Columbian rock art of her native country and expeditions to Spain’s Altamira caves in the Basque Country. Under the mentorship of esteemed archaeologist Hans Niemayer, a pre-eminent scholar in Chilean rock art, she developed her own graphic language in a book, " El Arte Rupestre Chileno, un encuentro con el Hombre Primitivo” (Chilean Rock Art, An Encounter with Primitive Man). Unanue’s credits include a degree in graphic arts and design from the Universidad de Chile de ValparaÌso and the 1989 prestigious Critic’s Award in Visual Art from the Valparaiso Art Critics Association.
States of Enlightment reflects these concerns and aesthetics based on the past and its ancient systems of writing such as -- ideograms, pictograms, and alphabets and how rock art evolved into writing systems. The show will feature 14 acrylic art works ranging in size from 16” by 20” to 3’ by 5’. Unanue notes, “My current paintings derive from dream images and sometimes from a spontaneous painting technique. These sources provide me with geometric shapes and primal elements, like stars, suns, moons, cosmic seeds, elemental matter and also figural forms, all of which travel in an evolving world, floating across the virgin earth, archaic oceans, and cosmic spaces. These images are a universal yet mysterious writing that directs me to my collective unconscious and reminds me that I have existed since time immemorial.”
Unanue has exhibited in Chile, Spain, Finland, Ecuador, Argentina. Since her arrival to the United States in 2000, Unanue’s artistic vision has been mainly expressed through acrylic paintings on canvas that have appeared nationally in Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York.
